Saw a sale and decided to take advantage of it. Finally own a proper drill and, for the first time, an impact driver!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now to address the big elephant in the room... 12 V. Yea, yea, I know. After reading reviews I am certain that it will be enough for my needs. Prior to this I had a no-name drill from Crappy Tire and all I ever used it for was assembling Ikea furniture. Now I’ll have a nicer drill for doing that and the occasional odd task. I don’t use power tools very much but did want the impact driver for an upcoming strut/shock replacement job I plan on doing. At $99 CAD it was a no-brainer since it was half the price of the cheapest 18 V combo kit I could find (and that wasn’t even Dewalt). So, I’m happy and will now be waiting for an impact socket set to go on sale.

12V will be plenty, that’s a great buy for that price. Wait until you try that impact driver, that’s a game changer!

those are awesome for screws.

Not so great on anything that’s torqued down like nuts and bolts, not in my experience anyway.

This will make life easier though. I have 2 Bosch 18v and they kick ass. I also have an older deWalt 18v 1/2" impact and it’s saved my ass a few times, at work & home.

Enjoy your new tools. Get a decent bit box some will come with the 1/4 & 3/8 socket adapter bit. I have not had luck with the drill bits that fit into the impact, just get a regular set of drilling bits

Good point... I didn’t think too much about the drive size before jumping into this. Is there any downside when using a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter with the impact driver?

No, it’s just that the 12v 1/4" impact doesn't have the torque. I am not trying to rain on your parade or anything. Just try it out, it has limitations, but if you are doing projects around the house, it'll be your best friend.

I prefer 12v over 18v. When I was in cabinet making I found 18v drills where too big, and heavy to use for long periods of time. 12v can fit in small places better, way lighter, and less wear and tear on my wrist.

An example: I was working on a “small” kitchen. There where 30 cabinets, each cabinet has 12 screws. I use a 16 gauge air nailer, and 2 drills (1 for counter sinking, and 1 for screws).

After using two 18v’s for a day my wrist felt dead, and it was too big to fit in some boxes. The next day I used two 12v’s. It was so much nicer, my wrist felt attached at the end on of the day. They also fit in small boxes due to their small size.

No worries, I understand these are entry-level tools and I don’t plan on building any houses with them. As long as the impact driver will have enough torque to use with a spring compressor tool for when I do my struts I will be happy... the labour costs I’ll save by doing it myself will more than pay for this set.

I’ve got a nearly identical set, 20v li-ion, and know guys who have the same set as you. Great tools. My set will take apart just about anything below about 50-60lb-ft. Batteries last a long time. But I paid more than double what you did for my set. You got that for a steal, I’m sure you will love it.

You should try the 20v li-ion set. Only just a bit bigger than the 12v, but longer battery and more power. Much lighter than the old 18v.

I have the same ones, but in Euro spec (More honest about the voltage!) They are a good set, but I wouldn’t want to use the impact driver for that- there is another version with a 3/8 drive. http://www.its.co.uk/pd/DCF813D2-De…

I’d be worried about the hex drive holding up.

You also need to get the magnetic light, which is perfect for working on cars. http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcl51…
